The Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres (Rotunda of Illustrious People of Jalisco) is a landmark monument in the heart of downtown Guadalajara, Jalisco. It honors people who, over the course of history, made outstanding contributions to the region’s cultural, artistic, scientific and political legacy.

History and Meaning

Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres

Inaugurated in 1952, the Rotonda stands on Paseo Alcalde, next to Guadalajara Cathedral and the Regional Museum of Guadalajara. Designed by Jalisco architect Vicente Mendiola, the circular neoclassical structure represents eternity, and its balanced, timeless design is now an icon of downtown Guadalajara. The monument has seventeen columns supporting a ring of cantera (local volcanic stone) inscribed with the words Jalisco a sus hijos esclarecidos (“Jalisco to its distinguished children”). At its center is a ceremonial flame holder, and there are ninety-eight niches meant to hold the remains of the state’s most distinguished men and women. Around the rotunda stand twenty-two statues honoring notable people from Jalisco.
