MiBici: Guadalajara’s Bike-Share Program

Mibici

The MiBici program launched in November 2014. It is a public bike-share system that lets locals and visitors get around the city center in an eco-friendly way, often faster than by car or bus. There are 86 stations spread across the historic center, covering almost 80 kilometers (50 miles) of streets, so you will almost certainly find a station near where you start and where you are going. MiBici offers several plans, from annual memberships for locals to 1-, 3- and 7-day passes. You need a credit card, on which a MXN $1,500 security hold is placed and released when you return the bike. The maximum time allowed between leaving your starting station and docking at your destination is 30 minutes; if your ride takes longer, there is an extra charge for each additional 30 minutes.

Keep in mind that the program is still fairly new in the city and not all drivers and pedestrians are used to the growing number of cyclists. Follow traffic signs, stop in the green bike boxes at intersections and ride defensively.

It is an excellent way to see downtown, and it lets you notice details you would probably miss from a car or bus.
