Sports in Guadalajara
By H. Trillo · Updated November 2, 2026
Guadalajara hosts top-level sporting events, and as in the rest of Mexico, soccer is the favorite sport of the tapatíos (as Guadalajara locals are called). Several professional teams play their home games in the city. The most popular by far is Club Deportivo Guadalajara, better known as Chivas, which plays at Estadio Omnilife. Other teams such as Atlas and Leones Negros, who play at Estadio Jalisco, also have loyal fans, and one of their matches is well worth attending.
Baseball is gaining popularity again since a professional team returned to the city: Charros de Jalisco, part of the Liga Mexicana del Pacífico (Mexican Pacific League), has played since the 2014-2015 season at the Pan American athletics stadium, which was remodeled to become the team’s home.
