If you are reading this, you probably need to visit the new U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara soon. You or someone close to you may also have had a less than pleasant experience at this or another consulate in the past. Add the stress that comes with any official appointment, and it makes sense to want to be better prepared this time.
In this article we cover everything you need to know so your visit to the consulate goes smoothly and you can complete your appointment successfully. We also go over the services, the location and practical tips to help you make the most of your visit to the new Guadalajara facility.
Location and Access
The new U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara is at Av. Manuel Acuña 3410, in the Monraz neighborhood. The modern building is much larger than the previous one, so it can process a higher volume of visa applications and other consular services and cut waiting times considerably.
Unlike Colonia Americana, where the old consulate was located, Monraz is a less commercial area. Services such as restaurants, parking lots, stationery shops, copy centers, hotels and even public transportation are not as plentiful or as close as they were at the old location. That is slowly changing. Since the new consulate will serve more people, more services for visitors are likely to open in the coming months.

How to Get to the New Consulate
Compared with the previous location in Colonia Americana, close to downtown, the new U.S. Consulate in Colonia Monraz may be harder to reach for some visitors. You can get there by public transportation, but in many cases the walk from the bus stop to the consulate is longer. For that reason, a car is still the first choice for most people visiting the new building. If you decide to take the bus, check Google Maps for the routes available from where you are in Guadalajara.
Other ways to get to the new consulate include ride-hailing apps such as Uber or Didi, which are widely used in the city and reasonably priced. If you are flying in from another city, a convenient option is renting a car at Guadalajara Airport. It may look more expensive than a ride-hailing app at first, but once you add the round trip to the airport and your trips around the city, it is often the more practical and cost-effective choice, and more comfortable as well.
Accessible Facilities
The new U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara meets the accessibility standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The building is designed to be inclusive, with ramps, elevators, accessible restrooms and signage for people with reduced mobility or visual impairments. These measures ensure that every visitor, whatever their needs, can access consular services comfortably and safely.

If you plan to drive, the consulate has a parking lot on Calle Acolhuas. It is available only to people with a confirmed appointment at the consulate, so you will need to show your confirmation when you enter.

Cost: MXN $30 for the first 3 hours and MXN $40 for each additional hour starting with the fourth hour.

Rules for Visiting the Consulate
U.S. consulates have strict security measures that you should know about before you plan your visit. One of the most important: companions who do not have an appointment or are not completing a procedure are not allowed inside.
When you enter, you will go through a security screening similar to an airport checkpoint. Past that point, personal items such as backpacks, cell phones, sharp objects, food and drinks are not allowed. Bring only a folder with the documents you need for your appointment and a small wallet, and leave everything else at home or in the lockers on site.

Where to Eat Near the Consulate
If you ever visited the old U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara, you probably noticed there were plenty of places to eat nearby. The area was originally residential, but the flow of consulate visitors led to new businesses opening for them, including fondas (small family-run eateries), restaurants, coffee shops and little corner stores where you could buy a torta (Mexican sandwich) and grab a quick bite before your appointment.
There are a few places to eat around the new consulate, but not many yet and with little variety. More restaurants are likely to open over the coming months to meet the growing demand. For now, the options are small restaurants and coffee shops such as Crujys, Braine’s Restaurant, Vive Cafeto Monraz, Boulangerie Central Embajada and Café La Flor de Córdoba.
