IKEA llega a Guadalajara

From its humble beginnings in Sweden in the 1940s, IKEA has grown into a global giant in furniture and decor for the home and office. With its focus on innovative design, quality at affordable prices and a distinctive shopping experience, IKEA has earned a special place in the homes and hearts of millions of people in every market where it operates. And in 2024, IKEA is finally coming to Guadalajara! Get ready to change the way you shop for furniture and decorate your home.

Below we look at what makes the brand’s products different, the shopping experience it offers, the DIY concept that has customers assemble their own furniture, and even its famous Swedish restaurant that everyone loves. We will also tell you what we know about the opening date of IKEA Guadalajara.

IKEA Guadalajara: Affordable Furniture and Home Decor

IKEA stands out for offering furniture with excellent design and great value for money, which explains its wide appeal. It may not be the best choice if you are looking for high-end designer furniture, but it is an excellent option for most people, especially young people moving out on their own who want good-looking furniture at reasonable prices.

IKEA’s Flat-Pack Furniture Concept

Part of the strategy that lets IKEA keep prices attractive is selling furniture unassembled. That’s right: every piece of furniture you buy at the store comes flat-packed, with an instruction sheet. Like a puzzle, you are the one who turns a pile of boards and screws into the piece your home needs. Some people find assembly tedious, but this is exactly what creates the “IKEA effect”: customers place a higher value on the product and feel more satisfied with it.

And if you really do not enjoy putting furniture together, do not worry: the store also offers an assembly service for an additional fee.

How Shopping at IKEA Works

IKEA showroom

When you visit an IKEA store, you follow a single path that takes you through the entire store. As you enter, you reach the showroom. This section is mainly for inspiration, since the items there are for display only.

The showroom has mock rooms, much like a film or TV set, where customers can see the actual furniture in use. For example, a living room with a sofa, a TV, a bookcase and a dining table, finished with plants, cushions, rugs, lamps, plates, glasses and silverware. Following the path, you move through other rooms of a home: dining rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and kids’ rooms.

Each product has a tag with detailed information, such as the material, its benefits and where to find it in the store to buy it. As they walk through the showroom, customers can write down the codes and locations of the products they like, or simply take a photo of the tag.

After the showroom, customers are directed to the Market Hall, which carries smaller products such as kitchenware, decor, plant pots and more. At the entrance to this section you can grab a cart for the items you want, because unlike the showroom, everything here is in stock and for sale.

Finally, customers are guided to the self-serve furniture warehouse. There you will find the furniture you saw in the showroom, unassembled and neatly packed in boxes so it is easy to take home. In this section you need to find the aisle and shelf where your product is located. Remember that this information is on the tag of each product displayed in the showroom.

Before you reach the checkout, you will pass a section with heavily discounted items. Most are pieces returned by other customers, items with some damage or pieces that were used as showroom displays. Keep in mind that these items are sold “as is,” which means the buyer accepts responsibility for any defect or problem the item may have after purchase. These clearance pieces are a good way to save while you furnish and decorate your home. Now that IKEA is coming to Guadalajara, be sure to check out this section!

The IKEA Restaurant and Bistro

The IKEA food area is an essential part of the shopping experience. What many people simply call “the IKEA cafeteria” is actually two separate businesses: a bistro and a Swedish restaurant. The bistro has a menu very similar to the food courts at warehouse clubs like Costco or Sam’s Club, with options such as pizza, hot dogs, ice cream and cinnamon rolls, among others.

The Swedish restaurant, though, has the biggest following. Depending on the time of day, you will find dishes ranging from soups and salads to classics like its famous Swedish meatballs, salmon bagels, cured salmon and fish and chips. There is also a selection of desserts to round off a day of shopping. And if you like an early start, breakfast is served too.

IKEA is said to lose money on its bistro and restaurant because the food is so cheap. The strategy is part of a plan to make shoppers feel that every product is affordable. If a hot dog costs MXN $15, a MXN $5,000 bookcase is likely to seem like a good price too.

IKEA Family

IKEA Family is a free membership program that gives members exclusive benefits. By joining IKEA Family, customers get special discounts, promotional offers, exclusive events and extra savings on selected products. Members also enjoy perks such as an extended return period, free interior design services, and access to workshops and special activities at IKEA stores. IKEA Family also gives members online tools and resources to plan and organize their IKEA shopping more efficiently. Since the city will soon have its own IKEA store, it is a good idea to sign up for the program so you are ready for your first visit.

When Does IKEA Open in Guadalajara?

As we mentioned, IKEA is finally coming to Guadalajara in 2024. The store will join the city’s extensive shopping scene in Guadalajara and will no doubt become a tourist attraction in its own right. It will be located at 1192 Avenida Adolfo López Mateos.

As of April 2024, construction had made significant progress, including the installation of the store sign, although it remained covered at the time. According to a video posted by the company, work inside the store was also well advanced. After a long wait, the official announcement came: IKEA Guadalajara will open its doors on November 14, 2024. For now, all that is left is to wait a little longer for a new shopping experience in the beautiful city of Guadalajara.
